SoCal So Good as U.S. Ports Break 2.3 Million Inbound TEU
U.S. ports handled over 2.3 million TEU of inbound containers in July for only the second time ever (August 2016 being the first). The 7% rate of growth was the fifth straight expansion and was led by increased shipments from Asia. In contrast to the recent past east coast ports did not universally outperform, with LA/Long Beach seeing a 12% growth in handling.

Savannah expanded by just 4% and Charleston actually fell 1%, suggesting the diversion effect from the Panama Canal’s widening a year ago has played out. It also meant Charleston fell behind Norfolk as the seventh largest port. Year-over-year comparisons will be distorted in the next two months due to Hanjin Shipping’s failure in late August 2016.
